Swedish Christmas Cookies are delicate, buttery treats often flavored with vanilla, cardamom, or almond, perfect for the holiday season. These traditional cookies are lightly sweetened, beautifully shaped, and often dusted with powdered sugar for a festive touch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg yolk, vanilla extract, and cardamom if using.
  4. Gradually mix in the flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
  5. Roll dough into small balls or shape into crescent or wreath shapes as desired.
  6. Place on prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  8. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Cardamom gives an authentic Swedish flavor but can be omitted for a more classic vanilla version.
  • Cookies can be shaped using a cookie press for traditional Scandinavian designs.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
