Thumbprint Cookies are a classic holiday treat with a buttery shortbread base and a sweet, fruity filling. These versatile cookies can be filled with your favorite jam or other delicious options like chocolate or caramel. Perfect for gift-giving or as part of a festive dessert spread!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cookies:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • ½ cup granulated sugar
    • 2 large egg yolks
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • For the Filling:
    • ½ cup fruit jam or preserves (e.g., raspberry, strawberry, apricot)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
    • Add the egg yolks and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
    • Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until the dough forms a soft, cohesive ball.
  2. Shape the Cookies:
    • Scoop out 1-tablespoon portions of dough and roll them into balls. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
    • Using your thumb or the back of a small spoon, gently press into the center of each ball to create a well for the filling.
  3. Fill the Cookies:
    • Spoon about ½ teaspoon of jam into the center of each cookie. Be careful not to overfill to avoid spilling during baking.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake the cookies for 12–14 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
    • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a festive twist, use different jams to create a variety of colors and flavors.
  • Sprinkle the cookies with powdered sugar for an elegant finish once cooled.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
