Bright, colorful, and fun, these Tie Dye Cookies are perfect for parties, holidays, or just because! Made with a simple sugar cookie dough, these cookies are as easy to make as they are eye-catching.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (assorted colors: red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)

For Optional Glaze (Optional):

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (optional for a colorful drizzle)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
    • Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  2. Divide and Color the Dough:
    • Divide the dough into 4–6 equal portions (depending on how many colors you want).
    • Add a small amount of gel food coloring to each portion, kneading until the color is evenly distributed.
  3. Create the Tie Dye Effect:
    • Pinch off small pieces of each colored dough and press them together randomly. Roll the combined dough into a ball, then roll it out gently to swirl the colors together. Avoid overmixing to keep the tie dye effect.
    • Use cookie cutters or a knife to cut out shapes or leave as swirled rounds.
  4. Bake the Cookies:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • Place the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
    • Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are set but not browned. Let cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. Optional Glaze:
    • Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    • Divide the glaze into small bowls and add gel food coloring as desired. Drizzle or brush the glaze over cooled cookies for extra flair.

Notes

  • Gel food coloring works best as it provides vibrant colors without altering the dough’s texture.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Customize the colors for holidays or special occasions (e.g., red, white, and blue for Independence Day).
