This Turmeric Rice is fragrant, fluffy, and golden yellow — a simple yet flavorful side dish that pairs well with everything from grilled meats to curries. It’s made with just a few pantry staples and comes together in under 30 minutes. Great for meal prep or a vibrant addition to any dinner table!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup basmati rice (or long grain rice)

  • 2 cups water or low-sodium chicken broth

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

  • ½ tsp ground cumin (optional)

  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)

  • Fresh parsley or cilantro, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.

  • In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.

  • (Optional) Add chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

  • Stir in turmeric, cumin (if using), and salt. Cook for 30 seconds to bloom the spices.

  • Add the rinsed rice and stir to coat the grains in the spice mixture.

  • Pour in water or broth and bring to a boil.

  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.

  • Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes.

  • Fluff with a fork and garnish with chopped herbs if desired.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use chicken or vegetable broth instead of water.

  • You can skip the onion and garlic for a more basic version.

  • This rice stores well — keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
