This Turmeric Rice is fragrant, fluffy, and golden yellow — a simple yet flavorful side dish that pairs well with everything from grilled meats to curries. It’s made with just a few pantry staples and comes together in under 30 minutes. Great for meal prep or a vibrant addition to any dinner table!
1 cup basmati rice (or long grain rice)
2 cups water or low-sodium chicken broth
1 tbsp olive oil or butter
1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp ground turmeric
½ tsp ground cumin (optional)
½ tsp salt (or to taste)
Fresh parsley or cilantro, for garnish (optional)
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.
(Optional) Add chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Stir in turmeric, cumin (if using), and salt. Cook for 30 seconds to bloom the spices.
Add the rinsed rice and stir to coat the grains in the spice mixture.
Pour in water or broth and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.
Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
Fluff with a fork and garnish with chopped herbs if desired.
For extra flavor, use chicken or vegetable broth instead of water.
You can skip the onion and garlic for a more basic version.
This rice stores well — keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
