White gravy, also known as country gravy, is a creamy and savory Southern classic made from a roux of butter or drippings, flour, and milk. Perfect for biscuits, fried chicken, or mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter or pan drippings
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter or drippings.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure there are no lumps.
  4. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve hot over biscuits, chicken, or mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder.
  • Use pan drippings from sausage or bacon for a richer taste.
  • If the gravy is too thick, add a splash more milk to reach desired consistency.
