This Mortadella Sandwich is a delicious Italian deli classic that combines thinly sliced mortadella with creamy cheese, crisp greens, and a touch of mustard or pistachio pesto, all nestled inside a crusty roll. Perfect for lunch, picnics, or a quick yet gourmet meal, it’s simple, flavorful, and easy to customize!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices (about 6 oz / 170 g) mortadella, thinly sliced
  • 2 fresh ciabatta rolls (or focaccia or baguette)
  • 2 tablespoons pistachio pesto (or regular pesto)
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or fresh mozzarella)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional for extra creaminess)
  • Handful of fresh arugula (or mixed greens)
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the bread:

  • Slice the ciabatta rolls in half.
  • Lightly toast the bread in a pan, oven, or toaster until golden and slightly crispy.

2. Spread the condiments:

  • Spread pistachio pesto on the bottom half of the roll.
  • Optionally, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard or mayonnaise on the top half for extra creaminess and tang.

3. Layer the sandwich:

  • Add slices of mortadella, folding them for extra texture and volume.
  • Place the provolone cheese slices on top of the mortadella.
  • Add fresh arugula or mixed greens.
  • Drizzle a little olive oil and season with salt and black pepper.

4. Finish and serve:

  • Close the sandwich and press lightly.
  • Serve immediately with a side of chips, pickles, or a light Italian salad.

Notes

  • For a warm version, grill the sandwich in a panini press until the cheese melts.
  • Add a few slices of tomato or roasted red peppers for extra flavor.
  • Use burrata cheese for a creamier, richer texture if provolone isn’t available.
